It's 40 years to the day that Sir John Walker broke the sub 3.50 minute mile.
His remarkable achievement is being celebrated today with a fundraiser breakfast for his Find Your Field of Dreams Foundation.
Manager of the foundation Rick Pickard said an auction of memorabilia will be held to raise funds for the foundation that helps kids engage in sports.
Pickard said every dollar they can raise helps the kids.
"We're celebrating John's success and also we're celebrating the success of the foundation and its an ideal opportunity for us to raise money for these programmes - all the money goes directly to the programmes, no other area at all."
He said they have also tracked down the original shoes that Sir John wore.
"We've also tracked down the original shoes that john wore, fantastic. It's going to be a great occasion."
Mr Pickard said it will be a great occasion with about 520 people attending the breakfast and it shows the esteem that Sir John is held in.
"We've got about 520 attending, so its been really well supported by everyone in Auckland and shows the esteem that John's held."
