Many remain unaccounted for since a deadly fire that broke out in Wellington just after midnight, which has claimed at least six lives.

Police believe the number of fatalities at Loafers Lodge in Newtown is under 10.

More than 50 people have been accounted for and five are in hospital.

Parts of the building have collapsed with fire crews still dousing the roof with water from above.

FENZ Deputy National Commander Brendon Nally says it's not possible anyone could still be alive inside the building.
