Martin Devlin: There's no such thing as the G.O.A.T

There is no such thing as the G.O.A.T (Greatest Of All Time).

This term, which has recently invaded the world's sporting vernacular, is as fatuous as the faux debate it creates.

This argument defines the term subjective. Everyone's opinion is valid, no hard/fast rules of qualification apply.

Tom Brady is the most successful QB the NFL has ever seen. Does that make him the greatest? Or does that merely signal he's had the most opportunities to be the greatest? Brady's on-field feats are almost impossible to believe. The fact he's even playing that sport at this age is incredible, let alone the level he's performing at. Brady now has more SB rings than any individual team. Against the Chiefs on Monday he was near flawless. Controlled, composed, ruthless.

You could never accuse the man of being overly athletic, but in terms of precision execution he is without peer. Add in longevity and his career is beyond compare. But as far as being the greatest athlete of all time? Puh-leeze! It's the biggest apples vs oranges sporting debate there is. And one I'm not even prepared to indulge in.

How can you possibly compare what Brady does to what Ali did? What Usain has achieved to what Serena is still trying to? And then somehow conclusively determine who's the better athlete? It is an exercise in utter futility. Fun sure, but ultimately idiotic. A sporting argument even dumber than most of the half-time Superbowl ads. And that really is saying something.
