Martin Devlin: Sky TV are killing the Halberg Awards

It has to be the among the most punishing television on our screens.

How has Sky TV been allowed to kill the Halberg Awards as a viewing spectacle?

It's so tedious and boring it makes the rugby version look compelling.

Honestly I'd rather be locked in that room with all the financial journos on budget night.

At least you know that eventually it's all going to end.

The Halbergs should be a night of celebration for the athletes where they can get together and cut loose away from the crowds and cameras as soon as is physically possible. Who would begrudge them that?

The TV component should be an hour long highlights package. But instead Sky would rather turn the whole thing into 5 hrs of tedium.

Why? Is that what the organisers really want? Is that what the athletes want? Is that what us the public want?

The coverage started at 6 and went through 'til 11. C'mon man. This isn't a Peter Jackson trilogy, it's an awards ceremony.

So there's your brickbat, here's the bouquet.

The ad featuring the little boy busting away from his nappy change and scorching down the beach is as good as the medium gets. Perfectly crafted, not over-acted or  over-scripted, it is clever funny and totally relatable.

Sky TV is behind both these television productions. In terms of good vs bad there couldn't be a better comparison.
