Sam Cane is both right and wrong in his comments about us fans.

Yes there is no way anyone who doesn't play at that level knows everything that goes on behind the scenes but no, that doesn't mean those who don't play also don't know their rugby. In fact in my experience (22 years of doing sport on the radio & tv) I rate our rugby watching audience as being especially educated and savvy about the game. But in saying that, and in semi-defence of Sam, I'm also happy to concede that  when the team plays badly and loses, there'll always be a fair bit of kneejerk reaction and blame game to follow. That's just the way it is.

Sport is emotional. That's why we love it. People react with real feeling and that's both players and fans. Thing is if you're prepared to lash the criticism you might also reasonably expect to wear some back. That's called human nature.

Everyone in the public eye wears criticism and it's especially more prevalent now with the advent of social media. So there's two ways of dealing with it - indulge in it or ignore it altogether. It's a classic case of having to take the crunchy with the smooth and if you choose to live by the Facebook you'll die by the Instagram. Any twit(ter) with half a tik-tok can see that.

Treat it for what it is - a person (quite often nameless and faceless) writing something they desperately hope is read and causes a reaction while never having to justify why they've said it and/or ever admitting they might be wrong.

As long as it's not spiteful, rude and stupidly personal then it's just part of sport.

Those who pay to watch have every right to express their opinions, it's as much a part of any professionally paid game as the players, learn to get used to it and how best to deal with it because it's never ever going away. Sam Cane is upset because the team, his team, is playing like poop. He should be upset.

But for social media to now criticise Sam for being critical of the criticism he's getting on social media...well if that's not the definition of la-la-cuckoo I don't  know what is.
