Martin Devlin: Professional golfers filling out their own score cards is totally unnecessary

The most ridiculous thing in world sport right now pertains to golf, professional golf, and this continued insistence that players fill out their own score cards with pen and paper at the end of each round.

Is it a bit of tradition or another slice of totally unnecessary administration?

Everyone knows the scores are up on the board, electronically and accurately kept for all to see - yet the sport continues to flirt with the horror consequences of what could happen if an individual scorecard is incorrectly filled out.

Simply put you can lose a tournament after you've won it with the slip of a pencil stroke.

Pro golf is so anal about its rules that it even allows toady nerds watching TV at home to email in and tittle tattle on things the course officials have missed - yet it continues to insist that players fill their own scorecards in? Utterly and totally ridiculous.

And don't tell me this has never happened because it has. Do the research. People have lost titles because of this rule. You win on the course and lose before the trophy presentation because you handed in your homework wrong. Maybe keep this  quirk strictly for the amateurs, a curiosity that belongs in a bygone age perhaps.

But there is too much at stake nowadays with the money involved, sponsorships, tour cards & individual legacies to retain something so clearly unnecessary.

Anyone who thinks this is an essential part of professional golf needs to get off the keyboard, open the curtains, leave the bedroom and go talk to Mum in person.
