Move over MJ there's a new King in town. Never thought I'd say this but Le Bron James is about to cement himself as the greatest basketballer to ever play the game.
The modern game I'm talking. Because how could you ever compare Bill Russell's record of eleven titles with anyone else? What he accomplished will never be done again. Neither will any player do a double three-peat like Jordan himself did. Or even match Kobe's remarkable record of five championships bookended over a decade.
All of those achievements speak as much about the endurance of these superstar athletes as their individual abilities - and that's also where Le Bron owns his contemporaries. It's not just his (soon to be) four titles but more the fact he's been so dominant, and never been dominated, for seventeen straight years.
This is his tenth finals appearance. And even though his win/loss record (if LA does beat Miami) stands at an unimpressive looking 4-6, the blame for that can be placed squarely on an accompanying cast who most years have been simply inadequate. Le Bron carries every team he's ever played for, it's pretty much been him versus the opposition in each individual series.
The 2016 win with the Cavaliers was nigh miraculous coming from three-one down against the record setting defending champ GSW. The two wins with the Heat were much more predictable with Wade and Bosh providing the superstar team-mates he's so often lacked. This next (presumed) win though will be the man's best yet given that he's still owning his sport after 17 gruelling years at the very highest level.
Then when you add the unprecedented levels of scrutiny and attention he lives with, the mind over matter games constantly played are almost their own separate triumph again. What Le Bron is achieving places him at the pinnacle of his sport.
So much so I have no problem saying there's a new King in town. His name is Le Bron James and he'll be crowned at the end of this Lakers/Heat series. Then we just await the next "Last Dance" show to see if he's nicer or nastier than MJ was off the court too.
