Eden Park is set to rock this weekend with 50,000 excited punters ready to roar on their favourites - only this time there won't be a bat, ball, ruck or run-out to be seen.
For the first time this millenium the venue is about to be used for night time entertainment that isn't sport. At long long last, after an interminable bylaw battle with the local wowsers, a concert will take centre stage. Congratulations to the band Six60 and everyone involved with putting this event together.
The obstacles faced, the hurdles jumped, the avalanche of admin needed to overcome a Neighbour's Association determined to scuttle the event at every sub-committee could easily have suffocated even the most optimistic among us. But no! They stuck to their guns, pleaded their case, answered all the curly questions posed and finally proved that democracy can still work even under the weight of council red tape.
Because that is exactly what this is. The silent majority mobilising to exert their rights over the lobbying minority. There are just two options for funding the park - events that bring in revenue or yet another multi-million dollar council bailout. For way too long a few hundred local residents have held the rest of the city at ransom, effectively being able to ban everything from the park except rugby and cricket.
And even those had a ridiculous time curfew attached. When the former PM, herself a local resident, weighed in lambasting the plan and calling it  "a home invasion of noise" you know how difficult it would've been to overcome such well-organised opposition. But they did and what they've won is a victory for common sense and sensibility.
The concert will be fantastic with a huge crowd anticipated, guaranteed to enjoy themselves. This could also quite possibly be the first time ever that every single punter will leave Eden Park happier than when they arrived.
