This Is Why We Lied by Karin Slaughter. She’s a brilliant thriller writer and this one – which is the 12th in the series - is up there with her best. Her two main characters, Will Trent (who works with the Georgia Bureau of Investigation) and Sara Linton (a medical examiner) book a secluded, off the grid lodge for their honeymoon but while there a member of the lodge owner’s family is murdered and they find themselves in a race against time to figure out who did it and why – and it soon becomes clear that everyone they talk to has a motive, and everyone is lying. It’s gritty, pacy and covers a number of dark themes – with a really unexpected twist at the end.
The House of Beckham by Tom Bower. This claims to be a tell-all on the famous couple, but is actually more a recounting of many stories and anecdotes about them which have appeared in the popular press. It’s obvious that the author doesn’t much like them and is scathing about David Beckham’s track record on the pitch, and about Victoria’s apparent determination to cement their celebrity status and their management of Brand Beckham. But it does play completely counter to the Netflix series which has been so popular with many viewers, which the author claims was carefully contrived, and shows another side to their brand which is interesting reading. It’s salacious and, in places, fascinating.
