I mentioned before the news, that my next guest almost inspired me to up and leave the family … to head off into the hills on an adventure.  

One day journalist Hazel Phillips did just that, ditched the laptop and set off for three years living in mountain huts and tramping alone for days at a time – all while holding down a full-time job.  

Hazel has shared her story in a new book, Solo: Backcountry Adventuring in Aotearoa New Zealand. 

After returning to the real world for a few years, she’s actually done it again and headed for the backcountry.  

Hazel joined Francesca Rudkin from Mt Cook on her latest solo adventure.
