On Easter Weekend this year four surfers came to the aid of a family whose boat had overturned at Taieri Mouth, in South Otago.
They managed to save the lives of four family members but a fifth, their two year old daughter sadly passed away.
Drowning is the third leading cause of accidental death worldwide, taking the lives of 360,000 people every year. The danger is much higher for under 5s with drowning killing more children than many high-profile diseases.
One of the surfers out there that day was Dr Will Allen. He spoke to Francesca Rudkin about that tragic day.
