Meanwhile, people in France have been rioting and protesting over proposed changes to lift the retirement age from 62 to 64.

These events have ignited discussion about how to reform NZ Super, with one economist suggesting an increase to the eligibility age and introducing means testing. 

Infometrics principal economist Brad Olsen says taking action around NZ Super will take time, and the best timeframe to begin would have been 20 years ago.

Brad Olsen explained that people who'd benefit from NZ Super would want to have the settings changed before they hit retirement age.
