Southland are expecting a physical battle against Hawke's Bay as the hosts gear up for their first Ranfurly Shield defence of the season. 

The Stags will be looking to use momentum from last weekend's 22-13 win over Otago, as they aim to reclaim the log o' wood for the first time since 2011. 

Captain Sean Withy says they will be keeping an eye on Hawke's eye-rolling mauls.
