What is a urinary tract infection and who gets them?Â
 Â
-Referred to as a bladder infection or cystitisÂ
-Bacteria gets up into bladder causing the infectionÂ
-Sometimes if untreated can go up into the kidneys – more serious infection is called pyelonephritisÂ
-More common in women – most women will get one at some pointÂ
-Less common in men – often related to an enlarged prostate as get olderÂ

How do you recognise them?Â
-Burning passing urineÂ
-Increased frequency of urination Â
-Sudden urgency to pass urineÂ
-Abdominal painÂ
-Smelly or cloudy urineÂ

-Children can also get urine infections: temperatures, or suddenly bed wetting at nightÂ
-Elderly: can be very difficult to diagnose. May present with confusion or a fall.Â

-Often the GP or nurse will do urine test or send-off sample to the Lab.Â
 Â
How do we treat them?Â
-Antibiotics from doctor or nurseÂ
-If its straightforward your pharmacist may be able to give you antibioticsÂ
-Drink plenty of fluidsÂ
-You need to see a doctor if you haven’t improved in three days, develop shakes, have a spiking temperature, or increasing painÂ

Can you Prevent them?Â
-Stay well hydrated, cranberry juice may help prevent themÂ
-Post-sex voiding urine sometimes advisedÂ
-Avoid wearing tight-fitting underwearÂ
-Make sure to wipe after bowel movements, going front to backÂ
-Treating constipation if present, as it puts pressure on the bladderÂ
-They can be recurrent and may need ‘preventive antibiotics.Â
