Sir John Key says he does not think some of Donald Trump's comments "gel" with what America stands for.Â
The former Prime Minister joined Simon Barnett and Phil Gifford for their weekly Six and a Song segment, and was probed on his thoughts on the current US President.Â
Sir John was known for his close relationship with Trump's predecessor, Barack Obama, and admits that there are some elements of Trump's presidency he admires.
However, he is not fond of some of the President's more controversial comments.Â
"A lot of his style, I have to say I don't like that style. I've always been pro-migration, pro-open markets, pro people coming and making a better life, and I think that's been the American Dream."Â
He says that he spends a lot of time in the United States at the moment, and he has seen the diversity in opinions on the President.Â
"In the US, there's quite a lot of support for Trump, and it's the stuff we don't really see," he says. Â
Sir John says that he still stays in touch with Obama. He is just one of the world leaders that he says he still keeps in touch with - including former UK Prime Minister David Cameron and Australian Prime Ministers such as Julia Gillard and Malcolm Turnbull.Â
"Some of those people were around for a long time while I was there, and you feel like you know them well."
Sir John also weighed in the publicity surrounding the sale of his Auckland home, his family's struggles growing up, and the weirdest encounter he's had with a member of the public.Â
