This weekend saw the Crusaders win their third Super Rugby title in a row. It was a moment of pride for many Cantabrians, including Jack Tame, who was born and raised in Christchurch.
He says that he watched the match against the Jaguares with pride, and he has always supported them.
However, the final highlighted for Tame that the team had missed an amazing opportunity in changing their name after their Christchurch mosque attacks.
The attacks led to backlash against the Crusaders for their name and its association with anti-Muslim crusaders in the Middle Ages. The Crusaders looked into a name change, but ruled it out for the 2020 season.Â
Tame says that the debate showed how New Zealanders, and Cantabrians in particular, engaged with that debate showed who we really are.
"I found much of the reaction disgusting. It's shameful. It is shameful to consider the number of people who felt outraged, particularly victimised, that they should have to give up something so minor as a symbol of support for a community that has suffered so much."
