A big win for trades and apprenticeships in this year's Budget.

The $1.6 billion package for trades training courses in critical industries will be free for the next two years, so employers can keep apprentices and people are able to retrain on the job.

Building and Construction Industry Training Organisation, chief executive Warwick Quinn says it will be important to make sure that money isn't wasted.

He says there's still time to make sure the allocation of the package is done properly, and a lot of work to be don't to make sure the various components fit together.
