Waikato Regional Council says the number of people taking the train between Hamilton and Auckland is growing.
Newstalk ZB has revealed an average of just 34 people ride on Te Huia during the week, with room for 150.
Council chair Russ Rimmington told Mike Hosking numbers are growing by one percent a week, or four percent per month.
He says in five years the train will be full.
