Police Minister Stuart Nash says he can't be held accountable for a mistake by a software company.

The personal details of 35 gun owners were accessed by a dealer who was using the gun buyback platform on the police website.

Nash told Mike Hosking the software company SAP is responsible for the privacy breach, not him.

"Don’t get me wrong, I don’t want to minimise this, it’s terrible what has happened and I am bloody annoyed about it."

National's justice spokesman Mark Mitchell says SAP delivering a service for the government.

"If you have a Minister which is not managing it or across what is happening, you get an organisation like SAP which start doing their own thing."
