Labour says National's tough line on gangs is not the answer.
The opposition is proposing a special police unit focused on gangs and a ban on gang patches in public places.
Labour MP Michael Wood told Mike Hosking National's plan won't do anything to make people safer.
"What's more likely to help is the things we are doing, like putting new cops on the beat and addressing the causes of why young people are joining gangs, and getting them into education and employment instead."
But National MP Mark Mitchell told Mike Hosking the tough approach to gangs is necessary.
"We are seeing gangs being far more confident and bold in the way they are behaving, with patched ceremonies in public places and intimidating the public."
