National calls out government's position on digital tax proposal

Tax analysts warn President Donald Trump's threat to retaliate against France's digital services tax puts New Zealand at risk if the government pursues a similar scheme with the likes of Google and Facebook.

Revenue minister Stuart Nash told Mike Hosking they're just doing homework with the digital tax discussion document and their first preference is an OECD move.

He says government would prefer to go with an international OECD option, if they come up with one.

"The only reason we put out a discussion document on this was to see if there was an appetite for this type of proposal. We haven't made any final decision yet."

But National's Mark Mitchell says that's not what he was saying the last time they spoke on the show.

He says Nash was far more bullish about implementing the tax and this is a massive backdown.

"National's position has always been to go with the OECD position, it's what we have always campaigned on."
