Video stores are on their way out - but one is coming up with inventive ways to stay open.

LISTEN ABOVE: Mike Hosking talks to video shop owner, Andrew Armitage, about his new idea to keep people buying DVDs.

The Aro Street Video Shop in Wellington is launching an 'adopt a movie' scheme - where you can pay to a have a lifetime rental of your favourite film.

Shop owner Andrew Armitage said customers only have to pay between $20 and $35.

He told Mike Hosking the scheme will keep their doors open in the face of online streaming.

"Just because you're streaming doesn't mean to say that you wont hire a DVD, the main market that we have are people that are interested in old fashioned customer service."
