Ministry of Education projections show the country will be short of almost 2500 teachers by 2025.
That's three times more than the current shortage.
Auckland secondary schools will be worst hit with ten per cent fewer teachers than what the region needs.
Secondary Principals Association president Mike Williams told Mike Hosking the government needs to do something different to turn the forecast around.
"So we need a policy setting that looks at the root problem which is making the profession attractive."
