Acceptance or tolerance?

Latest research suggests more transgender people are coming forward to seek medical services than ever before.

But is it because there are more accepting attitudes now than in the past?

Transgender woman Lynda Whitehead told Chris Lynch says there's certainly more awareness - but that doesn't necessarily mean acceptance.

"People are becoming more aware. With awareness, there's a certain amount of tolerance, although I hate to even say that word."

She said just recently she was subjected to a barrage of horrible comments online.

"If they weren't horrible, they were dismissive. They were sort of comments [from men], appeared to be from men anyway, and were comments that weren't even founded of knowledge."
