AT chairman says Aucklanders support speed limit plan

Auckland Transport's chairman says most Aucklanders support its moves to reduce speeds across the city.

The board yesterday gave the green light to lower speed limits on about 10 per cent of the region’s roads.

It’s made a few exceptions to the initial proposal after public feedback.

The city centre will be 30 kilometres an hour, but Nelson, Hobson and Fanshawe streets will be 40.

20 low-risk rural roads will stay unchanged.

Lester Levy told Mike Hosking everyone understands why the changes are neccessary, and most people support them.

"Two out of three Aucklanders understand and agree with reductions of speed to keep our roads safer and reduce crashes."

He says even those who oppose the speed reductions support reductions in their part of town.

"You have to take the whole weight of the submissions. Many people who didn't support or not support asked for their own roads to have reduced speeds."
