The competition watchdog could be given the power to conduct investigations into suspected market misconduct.
The Commerce minister wants to allow the Commerce Commission to initiate probes - without needing government permission.Â
Kris Faafoi says [told Mike Hosking] giving the commission more freedom could force businesses to behave more competitively.
He thinks it will ensure people are getting a good deal.Â
"We need to give them the tools to look into markets if they feel, and the public importantly feel, that consumers aren't getting an optimal benefit out of the market."
An investigation earlier this year found the petrol market may not be operating fairly, but it was hindered because some companies refused to release information. Â
