Kiwis are embracing Black Friday - the unofficial start of the US shopping season.

Discounts offered by businesses have generated huge spending.

JMIS Andrew Kelleher said it appears there are also good specials online as well.

''There seem to be a lot of different numbers, but Thanksgiving and Black Friday look like there were $7.9 US billion of online sales with more to come.

''Expectations are of a total of $20 US billion.''
