Currently, 324,000 Kiwis have been diagnosed with diabetes, and that's expected to reach half a million by 2040.
Case numbers have grown by 96,000 in the past three years alone.
University of Otago Endocrinologist Sir Jim Mann says New Zealand's outlook is "unbelievably scary".
