A plan for the aquaculture industry could see it expand to one of the best in the world.

The government's announced a strategy to grow aquaculture into a three-billion-dollar industry by 2035.

NZ King Salmon chief executive Grant Rosewarne told Mike Hosking it's a game changer for them.

He says they can aspire to be like Norway, which has a $17 billion dollar salmon industry.

"If you want to compete with someone, it is absolutely Norway.

"We can compete with them, and we can even do better than them."
