Federated Farmers has come out in defence of the agriculture sector as the Government prepares to make an announcement on freshwater standards.
There is speculation Prime Minster Bill English will lift the minimum standard for freshwater quality, but not to the "swimmable" standard environmental groups have been lobbying for.
Federated Farmers water spokesman Chris Allen told Mike Hosking that farmers are a "punching bag" in the freshwater debate.
"We just want the Government to realise ... we're doing our bit, we're stepping up to the mark and it's now time for everyone to be involved in this."
He hoped today's announcement would not adversely affect the farming community.
