Tourism Industry Aotearoa: Tourism is caught between business and safety

A bit of both ways from the tourism sector. 

It wants New Zealanders travelling this summer while at the same time, keeping safety front of mind. 

Several organisations and businesses in Bay of Plenty's Ōpōtiki district are backing a call from the local iwi and council for people to stay away. 

Businesses in some remote communities in the East Cape and Northland are supporting similar calls. 

Tourism Industry Aotearoa Chief Executive Chris Roberts told Mike Hosking tourism operators want their communities to be safe, but they still need people to travel. 

“They’re anxious about some of the social license concerns, what some communities are saying about whether or not they want visitors coming through at all.”
