A majority of local councils want a ban on selling fireworks to the general public.
67 percent of councils support approaching central government for legislation to ban the private use of fireworks.
Auckland councillor Cathy Casey told Jack Tame she's delighted with the result.
She says 90 percent of 8,000 Auckland public submissions supported a ban.
"It's not just one day of the year, it's year round. We get the callls, emergency services get the calls. It's unnecessary stress and damage."
She says you just have to look over the ditch to see how far behind New Zealand is.
"Australia banned fireworks 30 years ago, the private use and sale. There's only two states in Australia that don't."
