Sports have a way of whipping people into a frenzy, international competitions able to spark passion in even the most apathetic.
Scott Robertson has recently taken command of our national rugby team and his All Blacks team was set to face South Africa for the first time since the 2023 Rugby World Cup final – a match won by the Springboks.
The first match was played at Johannesburg’s Ellis Park, the All Blacks unfortunately falling to the South Africans with a final score of 27-31.
Despite this first loss, Newstalk ZB’s Marcus Lush was firm in his belief that the team was strong enough to win the next World Cup.
Not everyone agreed with him, and one caller in particular was quite vehement about it.
“Not going to happen, Marcus,” Lois told him.
“They won’t beat the Springboks next Saturday either.”
The fault, in Lois’ opinion, is with coach Scott Robertson, who is not “an international coach” and never will be.
“He’s only ever coached the Crusaders.”
Marcus shot back that they’re quite a good team and Razor coached them well, but Lois was unmoved.
“He won't do any good coming up against the rest of the world coaching the All Blacks, and you mark my words.”
While some of the texters may have thought Lois was being a bit bitter, she turned out to be right in her prediction.
The All Blacks fell to the Springboks at Cape Town Stadium, 18-12, and Lois was vindicated.
So much so, that she called in for another chat with Marcus, sounding a lot calmer this time.
“I got it right,” she told Marcus.
“Yes, you did,” he laughed. “Yes, you did.”
