A leading microbiologist says coronavirus health restrictions could be in place into next year.

Travel restrictions mean anyone travelling here from anywhere but the Pacific Islands must self-isolate for 14 days.

Dr Siouxsie Wiles says Kiwis are at risk until every country has contained the virus.

She says the travel restrictions will need to be in place while coronavirus cases still exist in large numbers.

Wiles says the world's in a race to create a coronavirus vaccine - but that's probably a year away.

She joined Heather du Plessis-Allan to answer questions from listeners about the restrictions and what it will mean for them.
