National is calling for a law change to deal with terrorist suspects landing in our country.

A Kiwi-born woman accused of travelling to Syria to join Isis will likely be deported by Turkish Authorities to New Zealand.

But Suhayra Aden can only be detained in New Zealand, if a court proves she knowingly participated in a terrorist group.

National's justice spokesperson Simon Bridges told Heather du Plessis-Allan there should be detention on arrival, for up 72 hours, so a control order can be put in place.

"In this case, presumably what's going to happen is Suhayra Aden will come into New Zealand, presumably with her children, and she will be free in the community."

He says this is the first person allegedly connected to Isis to come here, but there will be more.

"We should have a law that fits the purpose and does keep New Zealanders safe.

"In the first case, already we see there are flaws and there are potential safety issues."
