Police aim to check every Aucklander heading into Northland.

Tāmaki Makaurau's borders lift at midnight tonight, but two northbound checkpoints will be in place south of Whangarei.

Northland District Police Commander, Tony Hill, told Heather du Plessis-Allan, it's their intent to check every passenger vehicle from the SuperCity.

“Obviously, to be able to do that might be complex once we get operational, but if we can do that that would be ideal and we would like to.”

Hill couldn't provide a specific answer on how long queues would be.

“No, we’re not 100% certain how long it will be, but we ask people to be prepared to be delayed and we’ll try not to make those too unreasonable, but we really need to get started and see what traffic flow looks like.”
