Shock continues to reverberate around the Northland town of Kaikohe after a woman died in an apparent home invasion.

Police have launched a homicide investigation after they were called to reports of an intruder at the property around 11.30 last night.

Our newsroom understands a dialysis patient was seriously injured in the ensuing struggle and died at the scene.
