Environmentalists are sending a clear message to Government - don't light up our litter.Â
The Zero Waste Network group's launched a campaign petitioning Environment Minister David Parker to decline incinerator applications.
Chairman Marty Hoffart says it's a response to international corporates showing interest in setting up here.
"It makes it okay to keep making all this lousy packaging and all this plastic because people say 'hey, we can burn it and create energy now, isn't it wonderful?', but it's not wonderful."Â
He says now's the time to make it clear we don't want waste dumps full of hazardous incinerator ash across the country.
"It's totally against climate change. It's totally against everything that councils and governments are trying to do now."Â
Hoffart says two proposals are under consideration in Huntly and Hokitika.Â
