Money from the Human Rights Commissioner to the Waikato Mongrel Mob went towards a marae sleepover to help deal with trauma.

Paul Hunt has faced calls to resign after it was revealed he gave a $200 koha, after speaking at a hui in May.

He says it was entirely culturally appropriate to offer, as had he not, it would've been extremely disrespectful.

Mob spokeswoman Louise Hutchinson told Heather du Plessis-Allan all the money was put into facilitating the three day sleepover event -- or noho.

"Facing up and addressing the trauma you've carried in your life, so we've had two noho out of the Raglan Poihākena marae."

She says that they do not expect anyone to donate money when attending an event.

Hutchinson says calls for Hunt to resign is just right-wing parties kick the gangs around.

"Anything good we attempt to do is just kicked."
