Tourism companies are hoping trans-Tasman travel will be happening by spring.
Prime Ministers Jacinda Ardern and Scott Morrison have agreed to commence work on a trans-Tasman covid safe travel zone, easing restrictions between the two countries.
Tourism Export Council CEO Lynda Keene told Heather du Plessis-Allan their first wish is to get tourists over for the ski season in July and August.
"In reality, we're really more hopeful to happen kick into gear from spring, from the first of September, and we're going to remain optimistic about that."Â
Both Morrison and Ardern say the safe travel zone will be mutually beneficial, assisting trade and economic recovery, and helping to kick-start the tourism and transport sectors.
