The Greens are welcoming the news of Behrouz Boochani being granted refugee status in New Zealand.
The famed author is known for his account of the six years he spent in an Australian Detention Centre, on Manus Island.
He's been in the country for eight months, after initially being granted a visitor's visa.
Human Rights and Immigration spokeswoman Golriz Ghahraman told Heather du Plessis-Allan it's long overdue.
Ghahraman welcomes the news and says Australia needs to learn a thing or two about compassion.
“Also congratulations our refugees authority who can teach the Australians a thing or two about running a fair process.”
