KFC workers told to stay at work even when stores have closed

Fast food workers are having to sit around their restaurants doing nothing due to a corporate contract dispute.

KFC and Pizza Hut workers are complaining that they’re having to stick around at work until their official rostered end time, even when they have finished all work hours earlier.

If they go home early, they say they won’t get paid for the full shift.

Unite Union’s national secretary Gerard Hehir told Heather du Plessis-Allan that they believe it punishment for not signing a variation around changing hours and pay due to Covid-19.

He says that they just received an email from the CEO that has confirmed his concerns.

"We don't think it's necessary. What you're asking for in specifics we can agree to that, but we're not going to give you a blank cheque."

Hehir says that many stores are closing earlier than normal, but the employees are still having to stay at work for hours to avoid losing pay.

He says that this isn't right, as people should be spending as little time as possible with colleagues who are outside their normal bubbles.
