Consumers are being warned not to get roped in by the Black Friday hype.

This weekend is one of the biggest shopping events of the year, with many New Zealand retailers copying the American tradition to get people through the doors.

Consumer researcher from Canstar Emma Quantrill told Larry Williams that electronic and clothes seem to be the biggest beneficiaries from these sales.

However, she says these sales encourage impulse buying, which could end up costing you more than you think you're saving.

"It's only a good deal if you're spending money you were going to buy in the first place."
