The beauty industry currently produces 120 billion units of waste every year and the majority of it can't be recycled curbside and is going to landfill.
Now, a Kiwi entrepreneur Emma Lewisham has managed to make her brand of the same name the world first carbon positive beauty brand. She says “we could see that this was a problem and a customer problem […] so we've designed our product so that it can be refilled and reused.”
When the packaging is finished with Emma Lewisham will globally take the packaging back free of charge and either reuse it or pay to have it recycled.
Packaging can be returned to retailers in New Zealand or online orders can get a free shipping label with the order.
As a result of her efforts, Lewisham's earned the stamp of approval from famous environmentalist Dr Jane Goodall.
Lewisham says she looked up to Goodall throughout her childhood and wanted to write to her to let her know of the they were doing. Lewisham says she didn’t expect a response but Goodall wrote back with a testimonial, which Lewisham describes as a dream come true.
Goodall says the brand has set a new benchmark not just for the beauty industry, but for all.
“I sincerely hope that the beauty industry can follow Emma Lewisham’s lead. I believe they’re paving the way for the future.” Goodall says.
