A trainee teacher who completed a 1 year teaching course says she only got 90 minutes to learn how to teach new entrant children to read.

Auckland University has confirmed the delivery model for its literacy course was a one-off lecture, but said it's followed by 'numerous workshops'.

Carla McNeill, founder of Learning Matters told Andrew Dickens that reading and literacy is the cornerstone of a child’s ability to interact with the curriculum and wants to see an increase in the preparation of teachers in the teaching of reading.
