A self-confessed party pooper is warning Easter gluttons about the environmental impact of chocolate production.

University of Western Australia professor Anas Ghadouani says it takes 24,000 litres of water to make a single litre of chocolate.

He told Heather du Plessis-Allan not everyone's happy with research.

"I was actually heart broken. I was told off by my daughter's because they were like don't go there."

He says that the processes involved in making chocolate are behind the high water usage.

He says the 24,000 litres includes growing the cocoa plant and the amount of water needed to transport it.

He says it is one of the most expensive foods to make.
