A man shot at in Waikato's Taupiri this morning was dropping his kids off at school.

Officers were called about 9:30am after the gunman shot at a car on Greenlane Road, moderately injuring one person.

Waikato's District Mayor says police have someone in hand they're now speaking to.

Allan Sanson told Heather du Plessis-Allan the shooting happened just 100-metres away from Taupiri School.

Sanson says the gunman might have known his target would be near the school and premeditated that attack - but it's not yet known.

The school was sent into lockdown as a precaution.
