The Corrections Association wants to see more room created at Waikeria Prison before it's too late.
A plan to build a mega-prison at the Waikato site has been taken off the table and won't be considered by Corrections Minister Kelvin Davis.
It would have seen the prison capacity more than doubled to fit 3000 beds.
Corrections Association president Alan Whitley says the situation is almost at breaking point.
"We've hit pretty close to capacity, it's dropped off at the moment but it will start to build again, it does at this time of year.
"We will probably see prisoners in temporary accommodation or on floors soon."
