How do you keep hospital staff cool in the sweltering summer heat?

Hawke's Bay DHB spent nearly $12,000 in the past year on ice blocks and fans to keep staff cool in hospitals with no air conditioning.

Association of Salaried Medical Specialists executive director Sarah Dalton told Kate Hawkesby the DHB probably wants to rebuild the hospital in a few years, and is unlikely to spend on improvements.

"I think  getting hospital improvements is like a health lolly scramble. Hospital stock has been under-invested in for many years."
