The Maori Council is urging a moratorium on unrest between Black Power and the Mongrel Mob.

Gang tensions have been increasing in Hawke's Bay and Gisborne over recent months, including a drive by shooting and mass brawl over the weekend.

Multiple investigations are underway, with drugs, illegal firearms and ammunition being seized.

Executive director Matthew Tukaki told Kate Hawkesby the gangs need to find a resolution because the unrest is pouring into the wider communities.

"If we don't find a new pathway to deal with gang violence, the same things will keep happening."
